its not hole in the head if it just dissapeared its probly just his stress colors. they change color kinda when they are stressed. u'll know when u get hole in the head cuz it wont be black spots but rather more like craters in his face.

i agree with Kolewolf if it was only there for a little while then its not "peeling" but sounds like stress. what are your water params, and if in the statement i quoted you meant what your water parameters should be, ammonia, nitrite need to be 0 and nitrates need to be less than 40 but better to be less than 20. did you ever find out what was causing the HITH as the leading cause of this is bad water quality

we were all talking about HITH because he said that it had it in addition to the black spots not that the black spots were HITH, and yes its very possible he got it from petsmart if you havent had him that long but let us know your water params and that will tell for sure
