Hi, around feeding time, I shut off my filter. I do this so that theres no movement in the water and the fish have a chance to eat as much as they can without some of it getting sucked into the filter. Also, it keeps the tank cleaner because you dont got food shooting around all over. I usually unplug it, then I leave it off for about 20 mins. I do this to give the fish time to do clean up. Then I just put it back on. Do you think turning it off anf on like that will cause problems to the filter? Ive done this for a few weeks but jsut stopped a few days ago because I had the thought about maybe doing harm to the filter. What do you guys think?

I dont see a problem with that its not like theres gonna be such a large amount of waiste produced in that time

I don't see a problem with it either. I hear some people do this to prevent their overflow from sucking up all the food before their fish can reach it.

Everytime you turn the filters back on, just give a quick check to make sure everything is running and I think you'd be good to go.

water changes every few days should keep the water clean.
i don't recommend you should unplug your filter at all unless it's due for maitenence.
you might burn out the motor or something.

its fine dakota lol.
i do that on my salt water all the time when i feed the corals . i leave mine off for like an hour at a time, it doesnt hurt anything.

Just remember to turn it back on. its easy to forget.

Ive heard of people doing this. Petsmart does this when they feed their fish too. I personally dont like doing that I feel it just feels wrong and Id think it wouldnt be too good on the filters but then again Ive never heard of anyone saying yea my filter wont work because I used to turn it off at feeding time. I guess keep on doin it. Duno I just dont like doin it feels wrong haha

I hear of people doing this without any problems, but I'm always afraid that the constant plugging and unplugging is eventually going to wear and tear on the motor. Once the motor stops, so does the water flow and it always takes the filter an extra effort to get that water flow again.

on my Fluval 405 i Turn off the Water intake Latch and unplug.

I don't think it'll burn out the motor. if anything i think stopping the motor is actually cooling it down.
