Is this Ok to do with a filter?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My 2 cents.

1. I never see anything break when its on, only when you turn it on or turn it off, so i never turn off anythign i own off. example when have you seen a ligh blow while it was on? or your broke tv when did it break when you was watching?

2. I have setup by passes on all the tanks that I can, so i can turn off the filter without powering it off.

The thing I would be worried about is burning out the motor, like already said. Filters are made to constantly run, so everyday re-priming wouldn't be beneficial at all. Eventually your fish will learn to come to the top to eat, I hardly ever have food even reach the intake.

These motors are magnetic and the pump is centrifugal.
The field in the motor housing is still a set of coils with current running through it.
It doesnt matter if the impeller is spinning or not, same current wether it spins or not.

What wears out in these motors is the plastic or ceramic bushings on the impeller shaft or the shaft itself...Keep these parts free spinning, replace when worn and always run them wet
The pump will last for years and years and years...turning them on and off cannot hurt them.

i turn off my filters all the time never had a problem... anyways i got a guy with a truckload of aquaclear motors
