Do this. You're not talking about an excessive amount of overhang, so the 3/4'' ply will be plenty rigid to support it. It will cost you less than $30 bucks, and doesn't require any tools. Just tell the guy at home depot your measurements.

If you need help on making one on the cheap definitely check out the DIY section. Trust me it would be awesome if we could keep our hobby on household furniture it just doesn't work though unfortunately. :(

I hate to recommend the more expensive option but its the safest for you, your house , and fish :)
 
I had a friend that had a 29g overhanging a stand on each side,(no problems). In my experience over the years I've found out, anything 30g and up, is much more delicate than smaller tank's. I would buy the stand. Or build it if your capable.
