I have two Oscar ( bigger one slightly bigger them 6inches and smaller one around 4.6 inches). Had them together since young. Recently I have notice them clearing a spot in the tank. They take turn clearing gravel from the same spot( created an empty spot 1inch by 1inch) using their mouth.

They chase the SDs that come close to them while digging. They do occasionally push their body against each other or bite each other body, nothing too aggressive . I did clear a larger empty area for them. They somethings hang out there together.

is this normal behaviour or signs of breeding l?

It may be courting. Don't expect much from it yet tho. Oscar's don't mature sexualy till they are 1.5 years old. It's good they are bonding this way now. Should be a good strong bond by time they can spawn.

Would it be better if I change the substrate or place a flat rock in that area? The Oscars are clearing then with their mouth. Afraid it might get stuck.

No expert by any means but have been reading/watching a TON info since I got mine. Most of the breeding oscars I've seen have a flat surface like the stone you mentioned. I'd get one at the very least to stop them from having to digging up the gravel.

Purchase a piece of slate from your lfs but as mentioned by Jexnell Jexnell the Oscars are too young.
