i just got done setting up my new FEEDER tank its a 75 gal all-glass with a FX5 filter and soon to get a tetra whisper 300 with two 12" blue bubble stones and a 200 watt hydor heater i am planning on keeping around 1000 feeders in it

no my Ps are not on a feeder only diet i want to buy bulk b/c its not worth it to drive 25-30 miles to buy feeders when i get 13 miles to the gal in gas with my truck so it would cost me more in gas then it would fish if i went every week or so, so i am planning on having enough feeders to last a couple of months or so

along with the feeders my Ps mostly get a mix of tertra cichlid sticks and kill sometimes i throw in some generic tropical pellets too

so is this feeder setup overboard or not

If the feeders are goldfish, I don't think a heater is necessary....

they are but its in the basement and its a lil bit cooler down there and if i do get any ick problems i can heat it up and get rid if it if it wasn't for that the heater would not be in there but on the bright side if i want to set this up for real fish its allready done i'd just need the fish and to finish the stand

They are cold water fish....They live in ice.....

under filtered maybe but overstocked i don't think so one of my lfs keeps roughly 2000 feeder gold in there feeder tank and they look good and the water is clear so i don't think overstocked is an issue underfilterd maybe but i will know that for sure in about a month and i can allways buy more filters if it is the case

i would not have the heater at all if it wasn't for the ick removal possiblity and if i want i can change this tank to a regular community tank too without having to buy anything i know they can be kept cold i used to have a koi pond when i was lil and as long as it didn't freeze solid they were ok

I gave you a 'yer nuts' vote only because it was there. :D I couldn't resist :nilly: I can see the wisdom in this and I had considered the same thing but with a 160g garden tub. Somewhere I have a wholesaler that will ship you 1000 feeders at a time. It works out to be 2.8 cents per feeder. If I can find the info, I'll post it in the next few days. (Sorry to make you wait but it is probably gonna take some time to find).

Sponge filters are cheap and very effective. Look into buying two large ones even if you don't need them. If you decide to expand, they will already be cycled. They will also allow you to overstock so heavy you'd have to drain water to add the fish :headbang2

thanks for the info i found a place that sold them by the 1000s also but it was in cali and im in ohio and they wanted me to go the the airport 60miles from my house to pick them up and it would have ended up being cheaper to buy from the petstore after the shipping and gas money was added in but send me what u got i could only find that one place and maybe u got something closer to me

i can also see this getting out of hand but i set it up and its going to happen if i can't keep it clean then ill cut some of the stock but i knwo if the LFS can keep 2000 in a 75 i sould be able to keep 1000 in a 75
