Hello everyone i just recently acquired this motoro stingray and iv done some research and im not sure if he is healthy. I just put him in the tank yesterday and he ate right away but he was "breathing" heavily. Iv been having an issue with high nitrates and iv been doing 50% waterchanges 2 times a week to keep nitrates under 40ppm. I have a 100g tank with 2 cascade 1000 canisters each rated for 100g. I have 3 florida gars,3 peocockbass,2bichirs ,1 motoro in the tank(yes i know its overstocked ,im sorry). I have plans for a 300g and i also wanna try and sell or possibly give away 2 bass and maybe 1 gar. So i tested my water and my nitrates where above 40ppm and my ammonia(which iv never had detectable levels) was around .25ppm i went ahead and added some prime and right after work i will do another 50% water change. My question is how can my ammonia be detectable with my nitrates being high? Also i ordered some more bio media for my canisters and i was wondering is more bio media will raise my nitrates to deadly levels.

I have had this tank up and running for over a year now

Please any help will be appreciated

Your way overstocked with inadequate filtration, upgrade to a sump or 2 fx-6, and no that’s nonsense adding more media won’t spike anything. My best advice is to get rid of all the bass, two gars, and a bichir. Do a 25% w/c once a day till everything drops for now.

Let me get this straight. You added a ray to a small tank that you knew was overstocked. Now you want to come on here looking for justification that the seller sold you an unhealthy ray?

My suggestion, hold off on rays until you get your stuff together.

I also tested the water right after i fed them, i dont know how much it would affect the test results

No i knew my tank was overstocked, i know the ray is healthy because i got it from my buddy and hes had him for months now. I took him in because my friend is going through dialysis and it takes alot out of him so he sold him to me . i just want to make sure hes fine until i can give him a permanent home. I am thinking of takinng dloks advice and sell or give away the peocock bass and gar.

I think 1 gar,1 ray, and the bichirs will be alot better than what i currently have.
I just wanted some advice on keeping my ammo/nitrate under control so my ray will stay healthy.

Agree with dloks advice, very sound as usual. Do you have a drip system set up or is there any chance you can set one up?

He looks good to me. Have you had the lights on/is the tank in a high traffic area? Rays can take some time to settle in. I'd keep the lights down to try and introduce as little stress as possible. Good luck and keep us updated!

The tank is in my bedroom so im really the only person they usually see. I have the tank lights off but my room light is on so the tank is pretty dim. Hopefully the buyer comes by today and takes the bass of my hands . i was planing on getting some sand so he can borrow himself and maybe relieve some stress. Do you recommend me waiting till i get it under controll so i can see waste on the bottom or would the sand benefit him more? I have a thin layer or red sand atm
