Is this salt ok for the fish?

I use it if treating freshwater fish for ich. It is NaCl, which is salt, and because it is used for softening water, safe for human consumption, safe for fish.

Good logic here. Makes sense to me.

Another option is epsom salt found in the first aid section of any grocery store. $3 for a gallon size bag. WAY cheaper than using "aquarium salt" and i've had more success with it.

X2.... could a water softer be used for SW water changes, ? Hmmm.

I dont think so, I was always under the impression Marine salt was much different than just NaCL.

Sea water is not just salt and water, so not sufficient in marine minerals for salt water water changes, you would need to get an analysis of sea water and add the proper amounts of those extra components. (Potassium iodide, calcium chloride, etc, etc). But as a treatment for ich, simple NaCl works. Epsom salts are especially good for things like "bloat" where you want to purge a fishes gut.

One thing I've used and I know is safe is canning/pickling salt from the grocery store. It is also pretty cheap, well compared to "aquarium salt"
