A friend got a 20 gal in April for her daughter and it's been going well so far with the exception that she can't keep a snail alive. She's got a goldfish, mollie, and a couple other things I don't know the name of, and a couple ghost shrimp. Params are fine.

This snail, one of two survivors, seems to be lethargic, not moving around as often as you'd expect a snail to. He constantly flips himself upside-down and this morning, when I flipped him over, I noticed that his "lid" was sucked way inside his shell. It wasn't always like that, it used to be at the edge of the shell, where i would presume its supposed to be. Anyone have any ideas what's going on with this snail?

Nitrate 0, no salt.

The absence of n03 tells me the tank isn't fully cycled and more then likely ammonia is present. That would explain a lot, I haven't seen my snail since I got it, think its in the sand, can't expect much if anything from them...

Isn't the nitrate supposed to be 0? She's got test strips, so they're not terribly accurate. I'll have her get the water tested at an LFS. Would the fish and shrimp show ammonia burns or something if it was there and high enough to kill snails? (mind I have no clue how high it needs to be to kill a snail...)

I've had fish die from very high nitrites. I didnt know what cycling was before so it was my mistake. One minute she was fine then the next minute she was gasping for air then died after 10 minutes.

invertibrates are sensitive to nitrates, particularly when the water otherwise is fine. but i would get a full water work up to make sure. snails/shrimp ect are actually more delicate then fish, of my inverts start acting weird i always check my water, usually they head off a potential disater. also what is she feeding it?

I know to cycle a tank and told her what to do. The tank's been running since April. Do you think it could still be cycling? I thought freshwater cycled super fast... (I keep salt, which takes forever). I know nothing about fresh water fish. Lol.

She's feeding tetra flakes. The tanks got plenty of algae in it though for the snails. I'll have her get the water tested and we'll go from there. Thanks for the ideas guys. Keep em coming. The more ideas the better.
