I usually build my own stands for my tanks but have never built one over 4feet long. i am not too worried about it as the tank has been on it for 3weeks with no problems. The tank is 135gal(72x18x24) and the stand is 73x20x30. have i built this right or does it need more supports? also it is not covered yet so i just painted it blaack until i do. the wood is all 2x4's and the tank sits on 2pieces of plywood that is 1inch thick total. what do you guys think and what would you have done different to improve it????

The stand looks great and it looks like its holding the tank well. You can add more support to it but i don't think it's necessary. one thing you could have done differently is to have 4 by 4's in the 4 sides and the rest 2 by 4's. but like i said it looks stable and its probably fine the way it is.

The ones I build are a little more overbuilt. That's not to say yours is bad though. When holding up heavy things, sturdier is always better.

Next time, have the 2x4's that are on the bottom and top on their edge instead of flat. Especially the ones on the top. They are stronger this way. But nice job none the less.:)

I'll get some pictures up later today of the 55 gallon stand I just finished yesterday to give you an idea of a stronger design. Again, not that there's anything wrong with yours that I can see. Just that stronger is better.

if you want to add more bracing it won't hurt anything but the stand looks pretty solid to me....

looks good to me too...

if you go to your lfs and check out their stands you'll most likely find they're way underbuilt... or they appear so to me.

I little more bracing on the legs could always help, but it looks like it holding up good. I way over make mine, mine are made with 4x4 legs and braced with 2x4's, with top and bottom 3/4" plywood.

maybe some diagonal support long the back. i bet it would go down with a good push from either side

add support where the green is and it will keep the tank from falling to the side
