This crappie was caught by my dad in the summer of 1989 in a little farm pond in kentucky. And at the time it was sort of a big deal. The fish and game department paid to have it mounted and kept it for the first year on display at a taxidermist and also showed it at the yearly fishing expo and there booth at the fair.

My dad got a yearly certificate for a few years after the catch until his 3rd place was taken by a bigger one I guess.

It is engraved on the back by mike's taxidermy at 20.5" and 4lb 1oz. But It only measures a little over 19" now and 2.5" across the back. I don't know if they shrink when mounted or if the guy was full of it.

The mount has seen better days. i am looking into getting a fiberglass replica made one day.

So 20 years later is it still considered a big one?

That's a heck of a crappie do you know what he caught it on? Was it live bait?

A grub like artificial bait called a flik. There only around like a inch long if that but panfish love em. Black in color.

if its 19" its huge

It doesn't look very full, but it definitely is a great fish!

still big :D

but honestly my 13" looks wider than that :D but its only 2 lbs.. lol

Yours most have been a black crappie, and very fat.

Some lakes have short and heavy crappies & others have long skinny ones.

In Indiana a 12" Dewart Lake black crappie is 1 lb. But in Patoka Lake in Southern Indiana it would be lucky to be 12 oz.

I caught a 17.5" White Crappie at Patoka Lake & it was 2.25 lbs.
My brother caught a 18.25" black crappie there and it was 3.25 lbs, and the day before a white crappie was caught that was 19" and 3lbs, 2 oz.
