Long story short, I notice my bichirs like to burrow (a lot) into my gravel. I'm planning to switch it to black sand. Just brought 50kg of this black "sand" from a LFS. Not sure if it is sand since its labelled "sand" (total noob here -_-''')

Going to switch substrate next week. Want to see what bichir keepers here think of this substrate. Will it be fine for my bichirs?

Would be grateful if you can help me identify what this substrate is.

Based on the shine and the shape of the pieces on your fingers in the last photo, it looks like crushed black gravel to me.
Is it wet in those pictures?
How does it feel when you mush it in your hands?
Does it remind you of sand at all or something else?

looks to be Classica Natural River Gravel, its what i have and had no problems, all my bichirs are 10" up, you will probably only have problems with it, if your have 5" below bichirs.

It's just normal black quartz... It'll do fine for your bichirs :)

Oh dear, is it iron slag or black quartz?
From what I heard, Iron slag will messed up my tank parameters

Edit:

I just used a magnet and dip it into the sand, doesn't attract.
Does it mean its safe to say its not iron slag?

Looks like quartz to me. Iron slag should stick to a magnet. Could be aragonite, but that's easy enough to test, pour a little vinegar on it, if it fizzes, it's aragonite. Nothing particularly bad about it, but it will make your water hard and basic. Quartz is pH neutral, and my preference.

It's fine as long as it's not sharp. If you think it's smooth enough for your bichirs then its good.
