I got this fish as Decorus but It doesn't have the same body and tail pattern as the ones I am seeing online. Is there a large degree of variation between the individuals?
or do they have a different adult coloration?

yah, that is not decorus.. looks like a hybrid to me.. lots of syno hybrids have been popping up in the past few yrs.. still a nice looking fish though..

OH really? That sucks I was looking forward to it being a decorus, any ideas what it could be a hybrid of or how big I can expect it to get?

It is this hybrid - http://www.planetcatfish.com/common/species.php?species_id=602 - of the most common kind, called jaguar syno, leopard syno, valentiana syno and other silly invented names. $5 at 2"-3" almost everywhere I saw it. It lacks all of the characteristics of a decorus. Do note some variability in coloration - browse through the photos.

No one, except the makers (who won't tell; trade secret), knows the parents. One of the parents is probably an ocellifer. So a large size of up to a foot TL is possible. My biggest one of this kind is ~10" TL at 5 years old.

Thanks thats exactly what I was looking for. I've never kept decorus and I thought it was wrong but to be honest I am not experienced with Syno's. Only ever kept the featherfins before.

Do you have a picture of your 10" one

No. It's been living in a large semi-natural pond for a long time. I hope to pull him out and into a tank within a year.
