is this the right idea for my sump

right sorry bout the drawing but im looking to build a sump and want to know if im on the right path where the water goes out im thinking of having a large hole in the side of the tank like a sink overflow does if you no what i mean not sure if this works or not so any help would be great thanks

yeah, you are on the right track. If you just have a pipe through the side of your tank, it is going to make a loud gurgeling noise.

thanks fishdance for the info so the t piece will stop the gurgling not to sure how big the sump filter willl have to be but it will be for a 500gallon tank

wow thats a big tank...are you considering an internal overflow box? Or a hang on back overflow setup? A 500 gal. tank hmm...Im no expert but I suggest 30 gal. for just bio material be it bio balls, etc.

dont want an internal overflow want the tank to be clear of stuff like that and heaters
