Im going to be doing a 240g (8x2x2) see through tank in the wall and was going to go with 2 FLUVAL FX5 canistar filters but was told that it would be to much filtration and it wouldnt creat enough bacteria in the tank. So then i thought about goin with 2 RENA XP4 canistar filters. I was just wondering which set of filters would best suite my tank and wanted some other opinions

2 FX5's will not be TOO much filtration. IMO it depends on what you are stocking as to how much filtration you will need.

I don't know where your getting your advice from but give them a WIDE birth,,,,

If two FX5's can't handle a 240 then I fail to see how substuting two canister filters with a third thier loaded capacity is going to help.

Your options are limited by the planned instilation but i would still recomend a pair of FX5's... You hear quite a bit about them bieng nothing more than huge mechanical filters...and while they DO excell at it...with all three baskets filled with bio-material (I use cerimac rings) they have MORE than enough bio-capacity for a 240....EACH

There IS one issue...I recomend (if at all possible) putting one FX5 at each end of the tank...Normally I'd say put both intakes on one side and both outlets on the other but the hose length becomes a problem...even if you use PCV pipes the head pressure will exceed what those cannister filters are designed for and reduce the water flow to almost nothing.

If you only have a single end to work with then you'll need a good powerhead or two for extra cerculation.

2 FX5s would definatly be enough for a 240(if funds werent an issue id probably shove 3 or 4 on there myself). You can NEVER have to much filtration on a tank, perhaps current wise you could when your fish act as if they are in a whirlpool but never filtration.

rarely is there "too much" filtration. depends on what you use inside the filter, and how you have your tank stocked.

I've heard people say that if you have "too much" filtration then your water will be "too clean" and beneficial bacteria will not grow. If you don't understand why this is total BS you really need to read up on the nitrogen cycle and how beneficial bacteria work.

I have one FX5 on my 125 and I think it's just adequete. When I had it stocked more heavily I had to throw a powerhead on the side opposite the output to keep the oxygenation up. So yeah I would DEFINETLY suggest two FX5s!

Yeah Wolf I only have the very first outer chamber of mine full of foam. The next outer chamber has carbon and the whole rest of it is stuffed with bio balls. My ammonia is always 0 :)

I normally use modifyed E400's for bio filtration but I have a 6 foot 110 long with a hood that prevents using them so I started playing with the media in one of the FX5s. I think they get a bad rap in reviews because the factory media recomendation basicly blows... I know from personal expierance that a properly set up FX5 will cycle in HALF the time of other can's I've messed with....So much for no bio capacity...
