Is this UV any good?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
UV bulbs will kill parasites if used at the appropriate flow rates… No matter what brand you use…

The important thing about the brand is to ensure you buy one with quality electrical components, one that won’t leak, will work with your other equipment and one that has a reasonable price on replacement bulbs…

For killing parasites I use the formula of 1W per 10 US gallons… and a flow rate of 10 US gph per 1 W of UV power… in other words a 15W @ 150 gph for a 150 gal tank…

Pushing the water through the UV too fast will not give the UV light enough time to kill the parasites… not turning your tanks volume over fast enough can prevent all the free floating parasites to make it to the UV light to get killed…

For what it’s worth… I have 5 UV lights currently in use and have been using them for 5 years… But I’ve never used the one in question…

Check this out..:naughty:
I found this online..

"Be careful of some of the cheap UV sterilizers currently flooding the market such as the Aqua Medic, our service experience is poor with these units (leakage, poor sterilization patterns). If you obtain one of these units, you cannot make a fair assessment of what UV Sterilization can really do.
Also beware of the Internal UV Sterilizer out of China, first by Jebo now called the Green Killing Machine. We thought this to be an awesome idea ourselves, however after testing they failed miserably with not one of these Internal UV Sterilizer passing durability tests. What is sad is that they are now being marketed as the Green Killing Machine after most reputable retailers have since rejected the originals.

Effective ones (besides my custom unit) include the Coralife Twist (albeit over priced), the Cyprio, the ReSun, the Via Aqua Terminator UV Sterilizers and many others."

So I guess I shouldn't get this 1..:grinno:
