Is this UV Sterilizer any good?...

With the correct care of your tank, you shouldnt be even thinking of an ich outbreak. This means feedings, temp, light duration, cleanliness of water etc.

Dude, give me a break. I've got a thousand dollars worth of fish in my big tank and I want a little more insurance than feedings, temp, light duration, water cleanliness, etc..:)

nothing wrong with trying to provide the best. i have a friend having problems right now with some cichlids, he keeps his tanks pristine. less than 5ppm nitrate, stable temp, ph, you name it. he hadnt lost a fish from this system in years, now all of a sudden he is losing 1-2 a week from what appears to be internal parasites. if he had a uv he may not be having this problem. when money allows i will be adding one to my system without a doubt.

If you want a little extra insurance then by all means go for it. I didnt know you have thousands of dollars worth of fish in this tank. Its just that in the regular freshwater tank a UV isnt needed.

I use a uv for algeacontrol. Had a floating layer of algea, wich blocked out the light for the plants. No mater how many waterchanges, within a day the algea was back. With the uv, it was gone within a couple of days. Never had any sick fish either.

I don't think the UV sterilizer will kill internal parasites, they are most often passed through eating infected feeders/food. While there are lots of things you don't NEED to have to keep fish, some things (like UV sterilizers) make fish keeping easier. I've also been looking to get a UV sterilizer, but I discounted this particular model as being WAY too cheap. I've learned from my mistakes, and cheap is only good to a point. When other UV sterilizers run $150-200, and this is $50, there MUST be some issue with quality of construction or performance.

I was thinking the same thing. That's why I wanted to know if anyone here has actually used it.
