Is to much media bad ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
it could slow down flow rate, but other than that I can't think of a way that it could be harmful

It's not bad, the more you have, the better bio-filtration you have. Bio-filtration removes the ammonia, nitrates, nitrites, and other harmful compounds from your system. Generally the better bio-filtration you have, the happier and heathier the fish are. The more bio balls or scrubies you have, the more surface area for good bacteria to grow on.

It's almost impossible to have too much media but with a higher bioload the more biological filtration you should have. A tank can do with out mechanical and chemical filtration but not biological.

There's a catch with more media though. You can have a 10 gallon on a filter the size of your house, but it will only grow as much bacteria as can be fed by the ammonia. It's a living organism just as your fish are. At some point it's overkill, but it does take a while. Hence why we all "over filter."
