gorgeous beautiful art.. how old is that? If only we had beautiful buildings like that today.. all the intricate detail... and the material used.. just beautiful

My dad's been there a few times. I need to go myself! The Blue Mosque has one of the most stunning mosaic ceilings I've ever seen (in pictures). I might be over in Turkey for a day or two this summer while on my trip to Greece.

Love the pics. Istanbul is so rich with culture and history. did you get a chance to see the old marketplace? or the old walls of constantinople? in it's hayday when the romans where there it was considered an impenitrable city. until sultan Mehmed hired a hungarian to build him the largest cannon in recorded history. the cannon ball was a little bigger than most wrecking balls. the cannon itself needed 100 oxen just to transport it. talk about insane ambition.

Yeah, Istanbul was lovely.. until you try to cross the street :grinno:
I did get to see the Bazaar and the walls several times actually and that is one crazy canon :nilly: sounds like something out of Mythbusters!

That's really awesome, but I thought it was taboo in islamic art to depict humans?

It isn't taboo.
Depicting a full creature isn't liked though, but it's okay with a few missing limbs :screwy: I never got the point of it to be honest, but as far as I know no one really bothers where I live or in Turkey for that matter.
