This little bug has got such an appetite. The mollies produced about 7 fry one night, and within 3 days they were all gone. Had such a hard time finding fry in my guppy pond I jumped into the local canal on Sunday to get more fry. Had a hard time catching them and only got a few. Not enough to satisfy its appetite, its struck out and zapped a male molly during the night instead. Found the fish gasping while floating in the morning, a bad wound on the side. It died soon after.
I try to feed Godzilla as much as i can but it's always never enough. Came home from work this evening to find it had zapped a small albino cleaner fish i have. I can see damage to the tail bits but nothing too serious although the fish isn't looking too good, just lying at the bottom but still breathing. Feel like chucking the bug into the canal so it can have its fill of self-caught fry, i did see 2 more dragonfly nymphs in there so i know he can survive there, but i refused to take them as i already had enough trouble keeping 1 fed and happy.
Off the topic; my bf also found a huge pleco in the canal so we brought it home and put it in my pond. Apparently someone had thrown the poor thing away... It looked half-dead with a couple of brusies on its right side. Measured it about 2 handspans long, not counting the tail. Unfortunately it died in the pond the following Tuesday, my only regret was not remembering to take pictures of it. It looked pretty gross when dead, it floated and foam was beginning to form in the water...
I don't know what sub-species it was, it was dark brown all over, had a paler underbelly and yellowish faded spots. The mouthpart was at least the size of a 50 cent piece here, big that is, probably about a good inch in diameter. It was gentle and allowed me to lift it to just under the surface of the water so i could turn it over and see if it was damaged or not on the underside. Thankfully it was alright.
Sigh, poor thing, it sucks to know that people can do awful things to living creatures like that. I'm sure it must have been an old one to have grown that big, but still some heartless bugger dumped it like garbage in the canal. Well, at least it died in clean freshwater, not filthy and muck-covered in a drain...
