What are the odd of a brand new hard drive out of the box going bad?:irked: Here are my reasons I suspect why.

HD is a WD Blue Caviar 320G 7200rpm
runs noisey and squeeky
MY BIOS has problem detecting it when I shut down for more than 5mins.

HD passes Windows Error Checking
HD passes WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic

Do you guys think WD will let me return it?

If it is a new HD, it comes with a 1 year Warranty. You can look up the manufacture date on the Support section of the manufacturer's website by the serial number.
Call them and give them the serial # and tell them the thing is bad.
The will ship you a RMA box, and you get a replacement.

Sometimes a retailer will sell you "New Old Stock" and there is no longer any Warranty. In that case you are stuck unless the retailer is willing to take it back.

Usually, if you buy from a major retailer, you get new product, but often a discount house or website, may be selling discontinued products. That's why sometimes what seems like a great deal could turn out not so great.

Thanks NotNew. I got this from Fry's Electronic but it has been over 14 days. I think their return policy is 7 days after date of purchase. OMG this squeaky HD is annoying me really bad.:swear: I think I will call up WD and request for a return. I don't care if they send "NEW OLD STOCK". I just want a quiet hard drive that works without the headaches.:)

WTH is going on. This convo is too techy for me, I'll let you resume. Sorry for the interruption.

to say WD is not quality is just ignorant .... i have installed maybe a few thousand of them and they are just as good as any of the big time players in the HD world ..

but was far as DOA .. it happens .. its not common .. but i have had DOA of everything from HD's to RAM to MOBO's ... i would say if it makes any noise that is not expected aka not a raptor drive .. i would get a replacement .. if your car starts making noise .. you know its only a matter of time before there is a failure .. a HD is the same ..

I heard the same thing about WD drives. I heard a lot of positve reviews about them but at the same time I heard complaints about DOA. There must be bad batches floating out there like sick fish being passed around.:D I am a fan of WD and Seagate drives. I know WD is top notch back in the days but I guess they don't build the drives solid like it used to. I had a WD drive that didn't quit after 10yrs of use.:headbang2

I've use WD for years. Great product. I would get in touch with WD if Fry's will not take it back. The Caviar is still a relatively new product, so a receipt should get you where you need to be regardless of which avenue you choose.
