It has occured to me.....

Wal mart's stuff is too cheap, not inexpensive, cheap. If you want to trust anything you buy, don't get it at WM.

I feel that as a consumer it is my responsibility to vote with my dollar. As such I always try to give my dollar to entrepreneurial businesses or local business.

I like getting to know the owner of a company that I'll do as much time with as a LFS. I used to be on a first name basis with the LFS owner by my school. I would order fish and bought my current largest tank my 110 tall there and outfitted it there. They've helped me through many bad diseases and always honor their return policy without flinching. Sadly they closed 2 years prior to me graduating. :(

I only have one LFS I really like now that I'm back in the west chicago suburbs but its a bit of a drive for me.

Honestly though people talk up LFS products like they sell great things. I feel that they sell just as much crummy hardware as any walmart or petco. Most of the good brands are way marked up really high and really there are only one or two GOOD brands in fishkeeping hardware and only 2-3 GOOD brands in food and stuff. Of these you'd be lucky to see all the GOOD brands even represented at a fish store. Typically they carry alot of the cheap crummy brands, wisper, cascade, penguin, marineland. I've had major hardware failures from all these brands resulting from poor design/manufacturing practices. To find good product at reasonable prices I typically go online sadly. I feel that between trade-shows growing in prevalence and online fish retailers are in a pinch.

Walmart filters are desent but for the price of them I can spend a little more and get a emperor 400. As far as the heaters go the only ones I've seen are preset and I don't use those I like ones that I can change the temp on. My first tank I did buy from there it was a 55 gallon with everything included.

Walmart food: Wardley; 'nuff said

Walmart filters: Aqua tech brand is a cheap version of the penguin filters. they are very poor quality and use cheaper parts. also don't use bio wheels

walmart heaters: VERY poor quality. The glass tubes are much thinner than more expensive heaters, and easier to break. also, that "paint" on the heaters comes off after a few months. plus, they do a very poor job at keeping the tank the same temp. I've tried using these on more than on occassion, and every single one of them ended up with moisture inside the heater.

walmart fish: execept for the odd ocassion you find a walmart with a pet manager who takes care of the fish, the fish are normally in poor condition

did you just say walmart has huge heaters? i had a storm blow in and both heaters in a tank blew out and it was the middle of the night...the only place open to replace the heaters was wal marts. The heaters they sell are not adjustable, they're pre set for one temperature. Meaning, if you want to move the temp up for med treatment, you can't. if you want to lower the temperater, you can't. What good does that do me?

As someone else mentioned, they only carry tiny filters too...and whispers at that. i an get whispers filters at my local goodwill, no joke

Edit: oh snap, this is a 4 year old thread and the guy is banned. lmao

I noticed that, too. Everybody loves a good necro thread! :D

lol funny. Walmarts around here have 200 watt heaters. these heaters are adjustable, but only have a "+" and "-" as indicators. having it all the way on the "+" kept my tank from 75 to 80 back and forth.

they also have "Aqua tech" filters which are a cheaply made penguin filter without bio wheels. they have them for 55 gallon tanks and smaller.
