This post isn't a bash on true grow out tanks... they DEFINITELY have their place.

This post isn't about the people who go to the petstore and buy an oscar for a 20 gallon tank. those people don't know enough or don't care at all, they don't post on forums... they just aren't true fish keepers.

This post IS about some people on this site who love monster fish but can't house a monster fish. The people who know if they posted they had a monster fish in a 50 gallon tank that they would be ridiculed, so they just add the word "grow out" to 50 gallons and its a-ok now.

These people want to be able to be in the "I keep huge fish club" on here but... they just can't. They don't have the resources or space or whatever. And instead of accepting that fact and moving on to fish that can fit in their tanks and that have monster personalities instead of monster size... they just get a baby monster, run to post it in their sig (with the word "grow out" of course) and run to post it in the pictures section.

oh and what happens when the fish gets too big? oh its easy... take it back to the petstore and get another baby monster fish and just say you were "bored" with it.

Totally agree. I think a lot of people in this thread are missing the intended
point.

a. you have not purchased a tank big enough to house said fish at adult size

It is this one that will be annoying most people, the others I agree with but I do not believe that you need the tank for the adult sized fish. Take for example Aussie Lung fish they can get to 5 1/2 ft but you wont need a massive tank for a long time. It can take upto 5yrs to reach 18" then upto another 10yrs to reach 3'. Why would you need the tank for a 5.5ft one straight away if its going to take over half your life span to get there?

I agree with some of what your saying but theres an element here that your missing.
Our hobby, like so many others, is driven by the almighty buck. Those few who stand at the crossroads of responsability and try directing traffic need to stop and think about what we would be paying for fish and equipment if it weren't for the huge number of novice fishkeepers that grease the wheels of comerice with thier hard earned bucks.

Long time fish keepers slam petsmart or petco for the way they keep thier tanks almost constantly but line up in droves to take advantage of a loop hole that gets them a great price on a tank or a filter...
They dont care...your STILL supporting them and keeping them in buissness just as they and the novice fishkeepers you complain about make our hobby an affordable one.

No, I think most of us that responded got the intended point,at least I did, and the intended point is summarized in these quotes by the original poster:
"It isn't a grow out tank if you don't have any bigger tanks in posession that you are growing out the fish for"

How did I misunderstand that? It says what it says. I don't have the permanant tank in my posession so my grow out tanks aren't actually grow outs. They're an excuse for me to keep fish that will outgrow the tanks.
d. you have never had a tank bigger than 50 gallons

Well I have tanks bigger than 50 g, but I didn't always. A lot of my fish started out in 29g tanks, they were moved when I bought bigger tanks for them before they outgrow the 29g tanks.

if you don't have a huge tank, you don't get huge fish. yeah it sucks, yeah you want to keep the huge, 3 foot long aro; yeah you see peoples tanks on here and wish you had the money/space/time/ect to do the same.

That says I shouldn't buy the fish if I don't already have a huge tank for them. What am I missing?

What you can't do is buy a baby aro and put it in a 75 when you don't have anything else ot put it in when it gets bigger and call it a "grow out".

Think I already responded to that one.

I think the original point SHOULD have been if you can't provide for the fish in the future then you shouldn't buy it. How the original point came off was that if you can't provide a permanant tank for it RIGHT NOW you shouldn't buy it.

I realize that there are people that use grow outs as an excuse. But the original post came off as a sort of attack on anyone that calls their tank a growout when they haven't bought the larger tank yet. It was just kind of in bad taste, which is why I think a few of us got up in arms about it.

I'm still not entirely sure what the intended point was? Yeah everyone knows that some people buy big fish they will never have the means to house, and use the 'grow out tank' excuse, but so what? Where is this thread going?

I think the intended point was that if you dont actually plan on getting the proper tank, and you just tell people they are in a grow out tank (knowing this is their tank for life) that they shouldnt get a fish they cant properly house at all...

That was my interpretation of the original post.

I find that growing monster fish in a smaller tank makes their meat much more firm and much better for grilling as it won't fall apart as easily.
