That's what a lot of people say at the store I work at. I definitely made a mistake having hamsters as a kid instead of rats. You'll occasionally get a really nice hamster, but I've met few mean rats that weren't defensive mothers or senile old ones. Rats are great pets, probably the most tameable of the small rodent type pets people keep (rats, mice, gerbils, hamsters).
