I just got my very first pikes a couple of weeks ago, and look what followed me home this weekend....

Sorry in advance for the photos. They don't stay still for even a millisecond!

They're both 8-9" long, and were being sold as "Red Pike". I'm guessing that they're Johanna, but I very well may be wrong. My LFS NEVER have pikes in, but I went to Tropic Isle in Framingham, MA this weekend and lo and behold...one of their monster fish tanks was filled with 20+ of these guys.

$7.00 each or 2/$13...I'm pretty sure that's a steal for the size!

I LOVE them already! They're much, much more active than my belly crawler, who are no slouches in the activity dept.

looks like "crenicichla strigata" to me.

nice johannas

Yep, nice looking juvie johannas! Good pickup!

awesome. i just got 2 jo's, myself

Thats awesome!!!! Glad you are expanding your collection!! They definately look like some great johannas as well! Keep us updated on their progress! They are some the most varied of the Crenicichla...never really know completely how they are going to turn out...lol.

Thanks, Peanut! One started picking on the other a bit yesterday. Nothing too serious, just a bit of chasing. I'll have to keep a close eye on them, though. I rearranged the tank and added a big piece of driftwood to help divide things up a bit. I may have to move them to a bigger tank sooner than I'd thought. They're alone in a 55 now, but I plan to move them to at least a 125.

Now that they're more settled than they were when I took those pictures, they've developed a really pretty lavender in their dorsals (which is hinted at in the photos), and they're starting to get red in their tails, too.
