but last week I got a 55 gallon tank and stand for $80!!! I know, it was a steal, but I'm not sure whether to house a community of smaller fish or have a large, solitary fish. Aside from that, I want to use larger rocks along with gravel to give a more realistic effect. Any ideas/suggestions?

(also, I'm having a hard time finding a hood that runs the length of the tank, as there is no center brace.)

*please forgive me if this is in the wrong forum*

I got a old style tank that had no center brace before. It was one of the metal frame ones with the glass panes. And i couldnt find lids for it any were. I just went to my local glass company and had them cut some for me. I ordered a peice of that black hinged plastic that you put one peice in each side of it. And it makes is hinged so you can lift one side up while the other stays flat im sure you know what i mean. Cut the plastic hing to the right lenght. And had the glass company cut two pieces to fit right one for the front and one for the back. The one for the back wasnt as wide so there was a Three inch gap in the back for hob filters heaters air lines and such. And have them drill a couple holes in the front piece and put a couple simple little door knobs in it so you can use them to flip it up. It looked good and worked good. Hope this makes sence

personally i'd go with community of smaller fish with the 55s narrow footprint, feel like you could get more bang for your buck that way so to speak. although a male green terror is always a great choice as a large showcase fish
