Nope, this is incorrect. They don't look like alligator gars.

Definitely Florida gars, and nice yellow in the fins!

I think it may be more appropriate to call them Florida / spotteds with those pics. It is one of the two and most likely Florida but there is no good way to really say one or the other from the pics or information given.

I just assumed they were Floridas because I've never seen a Spotted Gar keeper in Canada. -shrug- But you're right.

it is possible to find spotted gars at LFS in canada if they were locally collected, etc; however, doing so is illegal in canada as the spotted gar is a protected (endangered) species.

that being said, it is highly unlikely for them to be spots since they aren't the right size for wild-collected fish at this time of year...the size they are showing up at more closely coincides with the FLG's that are showing up at most LFS these days.

again, as we've stated in the past, there is no surefire way to tell from just photos, but given educated guesses and surrounding information, highest probability points to FLG. we've tried calling them FL/SPG's before, and that ends up confusing the fishkeepers on the forums as well as when we try to convey research on particular species, or even when either are available for sale.

hope that clarifies a bit...or just makes the water murkier :) --
