IME it seems that cichlids grow bigger nuchal humps in order to be more intimidating to other fish in the tank, my midase's grows whenever hes within sight of a larger cichlid than him.

Because of this, I allways assumed that kok shrinks on males during breeding as a signal to the female that he's accepted her and wants to make babies.

Idk though for sure
