I've....got a ...plan?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I used a spa heater in one of the ponds I set up last summer and it works very well. The 4 chamber filter was designed with easilly obtainable parts and has kept the water crystal clear for over a year now. If your intrested in how I built the filter system let me know. The pond is about twice the size of what your planning but its freshwater.

hmmm ok no moray no lion. still would like a shark.
1 Port Jackson or 2-3- brown smoothounds?
kind indifferent on them except the SH's are warmwater

anybody know anything about fiddler rays?

and chris, would a wave simulator do the same thing as the power heads?
cause i know the power heads will actually blow the sand around, but would the WS do the same? anyone?

A wave maker would do the same as a power head because it uses the movement of water to do its bidding. Check out the plunger style wave maker they use on the Kelp exhibit at Monterey Bay Aquarium. Many people truibute this inovation as the key to the systems servival. You have to make sure and take many pics of your build. I would love to have something like this but my time and money do not permit. One day I will have a shark tank in my home!!!!!

Don't understand why you came to the conclusion that "SH are warmwater". The article clearly states that of the 25 species, SOME are tropical. I can assure you the SH sharks I've caught in the N. Pacific were feeding just fine in just over freezing temps from the arctic flow.

it said that the brown SH is fron baja california and the humbolt bay

Brown Smoothhounds and Grey Smoothhounds from the Pacific are cool water sharks. They need water in the low 70's and perferable the high 60's so you will need a chiller. If you do not want a chiller, I would go with a Atlantic Smoothhound, keep in mind these get to a maximum of 5' so they are larger than both the Pacific Greys and Browns. But they can tolerate warmer water. If you need any more information, Oddball is a great guy and will help, or check out the website in my signature. Also when it comes to purcashing the sharks, send me a PM.

Also with a 10' X 10' design your pond really aren't suited for keeping a Smoothhound over about 3' in length. although you may have enough gallonage to keep either a Gray Smoothie or the Atlantic smoothie.

And your pond's not really suited for a Port Jackson's either. Port Jackson's (Heterodontus portusjacksoni) grow up to 5' length in the wild - although in captivity they tend to grow to about 4.5'.

The better Bullhead shark is the California Horn Shark which grows to less than 40" in length.

so i take it i'm completly (^*%ed if i was thinking of a bonnethead (or whatever the really tiny hammerhead is)

The Bonnethead is the tiny hammerhead you're thinking of. Even though they're born very small (8-10 inches) they need a great deal of swimming room. Your 10'x10' would only get you by for a few months at best.

i havent seen an oddball post for a while...nice info as usual... and if you decide to build this pond take some flicks so i can awww at it...
