Dogs have an innate (meaning born with) character to chew. This is how they feel. Not with their paws as I use to think. I learned this from my personal veterinarian who cares for my dogs. Hence the chewing of tree bark, tree limbs, small sticks of all kinds, boards, bones, rocks, etc.
From reading articles about human foods given to dogs, from my own veterinarian and my personal experience, dogs will eat many many cooked and fresh vegetables and many fresh fruits. Most are okay to give to dogs, but others like strawberries, grapes, apple core & seeds, tomatoes and avocado, I do know can be deadly to dogs. Strawberry seeds cannot be digested by a dogs colon. The seeds get lodged in the folds of the intestinal wall, will cause intestinal inflamation. The inflamation could lead to a more serious symptom in dogs called Intestinal Bowl Disease or I.B.D. for short. Grapes have both arsenic and strichnine in them and will cause a dog to die. Apple cores and apple seeds especially, have arsenic in them also. The meat of the apple is okay for them to eat. [BOTH GRAPES & APPLE SEEDS WILL CAUSE DOGS TO DIE]. Tomatoes will cause a dogs heart to slow down eventually leading to a heart attack and die. Avocado causes dogs to go into a comma.
There is a website, www.ilovemydog.com, which has a list of human foods that are poisonous to dogs. It's a list well worth looking at, reading and adhering too. I do not mean to cause you to panic, but dogs are as dear to my heart as fish are. I'm not an animal activist, but I do not like or enjoy seeing any animal being abused. I treat animals as I would like to be treated. With respect, good care, kindness and love. I'm almost positive most people do. But take a look at that list of human foods poisonus to dogs and if you have a question about something concerning you dog which you're not sure about, contact your veterinarian.
