I've nicknamed my young fahaka puffer

Mine does, holy hell. She pouts about EVERYTHING. With age she becomes more *****y.

What do you mean by it pouting and being emo? I mean mine definitely has a personality and is by far my most reactive fish, but he generally just seems hungry and/or bored. It's kind of adorable that he seems to have a set bedtime at which he just completely disappears (he used to burrow but haven't seen it in a while) and boom, he's there again in the morning. Nothing seems to really phase him. When I first picked him up, I naively tried including him in my large predator community, and of course he just attacked things. But despite being constantly nipped at by an oscar he never showed any signs of injury or mental distress, and actually would follow the poor oscar around everywhere harassing it. Even during water changes he only gets out of the way enough to not get bumped into by the tubes and brushes, as he seems intrigued by what's going on and wants to see it. Despite their reputation, this guy is one hardy little fish.

At this point I can still feed him by hand, but I'm pretty sure that the only reason this works is that frozen silversides taste better than my finger.

I hand feed my big girl all the time. If I move something in her tank, add something in her tank, feed another fish before her, she will turn dark, go to the bottom and turn her back on me and refuse to eat for a day. Next day she is back to normal and cheery.

That is adorable. I just can't even imagine Punch turning down food in any context, though. He will eat ANYTHING. I think he's taken to stealing bits from his pleco tankmate's algae wafers and zucchini as of late.

As an aside and on the topic of Fahaka stress, has any of you guys ever actually seen one puff up? Even when I've moved him from tank to tank and done huge changes to the tank he was in I haven't seen Punch do this. He does look like a balloon directly after feeding, however...

I have, when Xena tried to "follow" me down the hall and jumped out of her tank, she hit the groud and puffed up. I put her back in the water and she deflated pretty quickly. had to rub carpet fibers off her afterwards...she now has a heavy duty lid

Well that puts the final nail in the coffin lid of my idea to maybe leave the top open and put some mangroves in there!

I've caught my girl all puffed up for no reason on 2 occasions... Both times she was just floating in the tabk and when she saw me, quickly feflated like nothing had happen...
