So I have this Jack Dampey I bought at my LFS and he's a complete beast. Won't share the tank with anything (except a yellow lab, who knows why) but all I've read online is that they're big woosies lol, is there some reason hes so aggressive? Or did I just get lucky?

It really comes down to the individual fish. Some jd's are docile some are aggressive. Reason: I would guess poor breeding practices if you bought it from the lfs. Not that there is anything wrong with buying from the lfs. I'm a fan of highly aggro cichlids myself.

I am aswell a fan of it, I've never heard of a Dempsey attacking you but he surly does not like my phone lol, quite fun to watch though!

Rocio octofasciata are called Jack Dempsey because of their aggressive nature. How big is your tank?

I was aware of that, but from what I had read about them they're generally quite sissyish. its a 55g with him and the yellow lab, who is much smaller than he is

you know what, I had my jd, gt from like 3 inch and the texas was fully grown,
they shared a 7,8ft tank and then I moved them
I housed jd with gjd in their own tank
he doesn't like other fish now
I think it's just down to the fish ?

LUCKY! I had a psychotic Dempsey, he was a 4 inch male and I bought a jaguar to live with him temporarily until I sold him, and the jaguar same size was beat nearly dead within 45 minutes. And at the LFS when they put him in the tank, he immediately went after a female Dempsey 2X his size and completely beat her. His lip was messed uo too. That fish has been the WORST I have ever had. I think it had to have been a "defect" it was unnatural, especially going after a fish 2X your size. He showed no hesitation went straight to fighting. My motaguense I have is mean as hell has killed 3-4 Africans in a day I tried to keep with him (mistake) but, it doesn't compare to that one Dempsey

I believe its all about tank size, if you stick them in a puddle, there's bound to be conflict.
When I have snorkeled with them in their natural habitat, I have not witnessed any aggression all. except when defending a spawning site. In fact I see them shoaling together, with live bearers, and even rhamdia catfish.
I took this video in the Eden cenote in the Yucatan
