It's interesting people keep saying convicts. I would have thought that he would just beat on them because they're similarly large and he doesn't really like other fish being in his tank. I suppose ideally a tank this size with just a JD and a RTS and perhaps a few danios would be better than adding some convicts anyway?

Yeah the reason why poeple keep convicts is cause they are small and they are good fish for other cichlids to chase. But it can also backfire, cause convicts are aggressive.

Throw in 5 silver dollars, big ones. I'm currently doin this to socialise a small managuense who refuses to accept tank mates. Theyre fast and look good in a school.

i like tiger barbs, they do nip fins but i found that if kept in a big enough school (8-10) they usually just bicker with themselves and dont bother the others, iv never had a dempsey but i had tiger barbs with Os before and as long as they grew up together i had no problems with the Os trying to eat them (though i may have just had passive Os, but i also didnt feed them live fish either only insects)

if you wanted another cichlid one or two convicts or firemouths could work, maybe a salvini, a severum, an acara.

but just cause you had one catfish that he beat up doesn't mean that cat fish won't work.

Never had a JD that bothered other (non-cichlid) tankmates. How big is the jack and syno? Agreed with the schooling fish idea, be it SD's or danios. Redtail sharks can be nippy as well, I wouldn't be surprised if he picked at your cat along with the JD.
