Yea mine hides all the time, and he has no-one to answer to. So I think it really depends on the individual, try Hikari sinking carnivore pellets mine loves em.
i actually have 2 jd's i dont know if its a female or not they do eat shrimp, pellets, & flake. they will not ever try to eat a an occasional feeder fish. they used to swim around all the time and all of sudden (maybe when the oscars started getting bigger?) the jd's hardly ever come out of the cave now
he definatly eats, just not as much and aggresivly as he did when they were all the same size. ive never seen him pay any attention at all to any feeders that ive ever put in the tank. i guess i just thought that the jd would eat them like the oscars do.
