I have a jack dempsey who has been like this (in the bucket, he was in the tank for a while before I removed him I honestly thought he was going to die right away...) for almost 2 weeks now, hes in a 5 gallon bucked with around 2 1/2 gallons of water and an air stone, I have been changing 2/3s of the water every day adding salt and melafix. I attempted to feed him/her but he refuses (I was able to force feed some pellets every couple of days). The area that is sticking out of the water is red and inflamed. I'm at the point where I think he just needs to be put down (he is still active though...). Do you think he can be saved? If not what is a humane/quick way to put him down. The pictures were taken 2 days ago the area is inflamed now

I had two cons that developed the same thing.. I let them die on their own.. of course after treating them and helping as much as I could..

Although now, I can't watch them suffer like that ..and for so long.. For the first time a couple weeks ago I had to decapitate one of my female geos due to an injury that she could not recooperate from.. it's so hard to do something like that... but I think it's harder to watch them suffer...

and no, I don't think he can be saved.. but don't take my word for it.. GL

Hes slowly getting worse, the thing that bothers me is that he still has enough energy to swim and thrash around if I mess with him and his fins are constantly moving...

Man, thats stinks, not sure what to do I try a little longer with the melafix because that stuff seems to work wonders you just gotta give it time. Also I would try mixing that with pimafix thats what I did to nurse one of my Oscars back to good health took a few weeks but now hes great and healthy. I don't know much about euthanizeing fish this is a good article on it though describes some humane methods http://www.fishchannel.com/fish-health/euthanasia.aspx best of luck to you and your Dempsey would be sad if you have to end up putting him down keep us posted

Mine did the exact same thing.. swam like normal and all excited at feeding time.. just when he wasn't messing around with the other con.. or eating he was lying on his side all day..

Yeah its showing no signs of getting better.

tough call bud. Feel bad for ya.
I dont think it will ever recover to be a normal fish. Just a thought not a fact.

I have decided to euthanize him, how is the problem hes pretty big... I read the article I dont think I would be able to smash his head...
