Jack Dempsey behavior

i had recently got rid of my 6 or so inch jack dempset because he acted like he was big and bad but when it came to fighting he wouldnt never really bite, just touch the other fish with his lips. it was really lame, i dunt need any punk ass fish like that in my tank. after i took him out my flowerhorn gained control and now has brighter colors than ever and a hump coming in. he pwns the tank now.

It's Named after the famous boxer from the 1920's, the Jack Dempsey.'The Manassa Mauler'(give you an idea) They are very hardy once acclimated to your tank and should live for a very long time if properly fed with a varied diet. Also, please keep in mind that they have no problem eating smaller tankmates. Try to keep them with fish of similar temperament BUT Watch for aggressiveness my one is a cross and is he cross. O and females tend to be less trouble.

nomadofthehills....what a stupid name.... having the guts to fight the flowerhorn was not the case, he is just like a fish that acts like hes bad but its really just a show and he is a punk on the inside. the flowerhorn gets mad and really bites the other fish not like the hoe ass jack.....

I have mine in a tank with convicts and firemouths and he is easily the most personable fish I have, readily taking food right from my fingertips. I agree that they should be in more of a community surrounding unless you plan to breed them.

You could also take all the hiding spaces out for a couple of weeks... I have never had thisproblem for more than a little while... Like i said I can take a picture of any or all of my fish at anytime of the day.. They are out of hiding when i'm not in the room and even more so when i am :) I just took about 200 pics total in the past 3 days and my Dempseys were in or could have been in most :)

I usually see RD's in gravel tanks with nothing else... And then I see them get some hiding spaces added .. But I beleive the set ups i've seen that way are for breeding purposes... I am not an authority on either Sp. mind you.. Just my experience with both :)
