I have two juvenile jack dempseys. I have had them for a few months and lately I have seen the two following each other around like a pair would do. They do not lash out at each other, and I have noticed them flashing colors at each other but mostly it is the larger of the two. The first one is 3.5-4" I believe it is a he because he had grown larger than the other one, is darker(not sure if that is a factor), and has a lot more color. The second one is 2.5-3" it is smaller than the other and is not as colorful. I added pictures if everyone can help me sex them and give me some info if they are ready to breed.

P.S. They are a bit eaten up in the picture because they are not the run of the tank but recently they have been chasing off others

The larger(hopefully the male)

The smaller(hopefully the female)

yeah they do look like a male and female but im not 100% never had any luck sexing jds. i know the male has to be atleast 8" to breed the female is about her size or so . btw the male is darker because he is a blue gene meaning he carrys the blue gene in order to make electric blues but i think in your case they will make 50% blue gene and 50% regular but i could be wrong

Do they sound like a pair? She follows him everywhere he goes and he allows it. While I was trying to take their picture he was swimming between her and I :). They will separate from each other but not for long and when they meet each other the smaller one will nudge the other one.

yeah they do sound like a pair , my firemouths do the same thing just now he tries to bite me while she defends their eggs. dont worry he's still got a few more inches to grow and they seem to be interested in each other so thats a good thing.

yeah for sure unless its a dwarf witch i highly doubt he is. when i had my jds and was tryin to breed em everything i've read about breeding them says he has to be 8".

Why I asked was I have a older breeding pair and I would guess he is 6" maybe I haven't measured him in a bit but he has spawned succesfully. Any tips on getting them to grow faster? I feed them 3-4 times a day on quality cichlid pellets, and occasionally give them bits of an bananna

well like i said its what i read , i've never had any success breeding them so i wouldnt know for sure so he might be breed around 6" like your other male . i never heard about bits of banannas bit i would give mine beefheart and brime shrimp every other day and 1-2 small feedings of pellets and cichlid flakes a day works good for me but to each its own everyone has their own opinion on what works better

Both look female to me due to the blue face males usually don't have to much blue on the face

i thought the same thing but the males do have more spangles then females do and the female have their spangles on their gill plates as if they are blue beards
