i just got a new Jack Dempsey Cichlid in my 55 gallon tank. She is in there with my Red oscar that i have had for 18 months. i am hoping that when she gets bigger they will breed. The problem is i do not know if she is a she or not haha. i call her a she out of wishfull thinking. she has the blue jaw. at least her lips are blue and right under her lips are a light blue in color. she is also being really aggressive with my bubbled eyed goldfish. the goldfish is bigger than her. is that normal? The red oscar does not attack her like he does other fish. Does this mean anything?? Thanks for the feed back!!

I don't think Oscars and dempseys cannot breed together

Also, you will need to get a bigger tank soon as the oscar fills the 55 up by itself.

And a female will have a blue "beard" on her gill plates and will not be as colorful as a male.

first of all

second of all red oscar+ jack dempsey in a 55gal=BAD Idea. the tank is too small and these fish grow at a rate of about an inch a month the oscars growing to a maximum of 14 inches producing a very large bioload
the demises also grow fast growing to about 8 inches or more depending on the sex.

how did you sex the oscar they are very difficult to sex accurately as you have to look at spot things on the pelvic fins.

oscars are south American and Dempsey are from the Yucatan peninsula they can live together but you will need a much larger tank as in 100 gallons.

as far as I know a dempsey oscar hybrid has never been made but I would assume it would require lost of intervention using hormones. it might be impossible.

A few concerns here with this scenario. You have an Oscar, JD, and a goldfish in a 55 gal.; these are not ideal conditions. You have had the Oscar a year and a half and it is only eight inches? I have a few friends that own Oscars and they grew a lot faster and larger in less time than that. I have never reared Oscars so I'm not an expert though. Maybe their experiences are rare. But a 55 is going to be really tight for those three fish. Both Os and large goldfish will create a lot of waste. You will have to do a lot of large water changes if you kept them for long in that tank. Another thing, I doubt very seriously that an Oscar and JD would ever breed. I'm not saying that it is impossible (I have seen some really odd hybrids on this site!) but it is HIGHLY unlikely. They are both cichlids but they are not closely related at all. If you are really interested in producing questionable hybrids I suggest searching the hybrid forum. I'm sure you will find many cichlids that have been proven to cross breed in that section. I really can't imagine how an Oscar x JD would even look like or why any one would want such a thing. To each his own I guess.

the goldfish is only a small fish. it will get no bigger then it is now and thats probably 4 inches. i do not think that my oscar is only 8 inches but i could be wrong. i just tried to hold a ruler up to him but he is not having it right now but it looks to be that he is 10 inches. i would like to know how to tell the difference between a male and female red oscar. the JD and oscar actually have a great relationship so far. i also have an alge eater in the tank that is the same age with the oscar and is no where near my fishes lenght. just picture a gray JD with strips acron the upper body with specks down its side that look like blue dimands mixed with a red oscar. i just think that would be great! Yes i know that it is not perfect but there are no oscars that i have found big enough to stand being in the tank with my fish other than this JD. i need to see if they are even opposite sexes!

You would have to vent the oscar to be able to tell the sex, there are threads on venting you will have to search for it. as far as the dempsey and the oscar breeding prob wont happen, from what everyone says oscars cant breed with anything but oscars. but if they do then that would prob be cool. dempseys are easy to tell

i just checked out a website and my oscar is male. how can i be 100% or at least 70% sure about the JD?.. It would be cool if they got together! if anyone has any ideas on how to get the magic going? i am and have been feeding them with high protein in their diet to help them in tons of ways but they are new to each tother..
