the goldfish is only a small fish. it will get no bigger then it is now and thats probably 4 inches. i do not think that my oscar is only 8 inches but i could be wrong. i just tried to hold a ruler up to him but he is not having it right now but it looks to be that he is 10 inches. i would like to know how to tell the difference between a male and female red oscar. the JD and oscar actually have a great relationship so far. i also have an alge eater in the tank that is the same age with the oscar and is no where near my fishes lenght. just picture a gray JD with strips acron the upper body with specks down its side that look like blue dimands mixed with a red oscar. i just think that would be great! Yes i know that it is not perfect but there are no oscars that i have found big enough to stand being in the tank with my fish other than this JD. i need to see if they are even opposite sexes!
if your oscar is 10" he is going to need a bigger tank real soon. :)

dempsey if female will have spangles on the gill plate and rounded fins. my oscar and carpintis paired up but nothing ever happened, i was trying to get the carpintis to pair with the red devil

agreed

your JD and Oscar will not breed . . . they are not related in any significant way, other than both being cichlids . . . as noted, they come from very different regions and have very different genetics . . . no sugar-coating, it is not going to happen

the reason your 55G will be too small for a full grown Oscar is that the width of a 55G tank is only approx 12" . . . a lot of fishkeepers (myself included) would like to see the width of the tank be more like 1.5 to 2x the length of the adult fish . . . so a 10-12" adult Oscar would be much better in a tank that is 18" wide, like a 75G or 90G . . . 24" wide would be better still

a female JD might typically max out at around 8", so a 55G is not a bad size for the JD, but it would be too small for the oscar

bottom-line, this is just advice, it's up to you whether or not to follow it . . .

guy above me is right its jsut advice but post pics of your dempsey ill be glad to sex it. how big is it. if its not large enough oscar migh eat it. my demspey when after my eel and the eel was longer than him. but it really depends on the oscars personality

remember the happier you make your fish the happier they will make you when they are cramped and the water is dirty they are not nearly as shiny. I clean my fish tanks once or more a week and it pay off. on my small tank I use a baster to pick up un eaten food almost daily.

i take Fantastic care for my fish. them and the plancs are my babies!! i know super dorky but that is how i feel! **** i have spanked my oscar named chad when he ripped up one of my plants and ever since then he has not ripped anything up! i am so happy that it worked! he has a great personality but very dominate!!

i just checked out a website and my oscar is male. how can i be 100% or at least 70% sure about the JD?.. It would be cool if they got together! if anyone has any ideas on how to get the magic going? i am and have been feeding them with high protein in their diet to help them in tons of ways but they are new to each tother..
It's not going to happen. They are not going to breed. When you do actually get a breeding pair of cichlids look out for the pleco. Plecos are notorious egg eaters. You don't have to worry about that in your case because they are not going to pair. Why not get a bigger tank and try crossing two colorations of Oscars? Maybe then you will find a desirable pattern. This JD x Oscar thing just isn't going to happen. If you manage to breed the impossible, please post pics!
