Duane, do you have any underwater shots of them, or tank shots of wild-caught adults? I've often wondered what adult wild JDs look like. I've heard for years that their shape is totally different than the domesticated versions. One of the things I dislike about JDs is their shape, so I was curious to know how the wilds were in comparison.

Nothing underwater yet, didn't have a housing, hope to go back again this year though. They did seem thinner and more torpedo shaped, much less stocky than the normal tank raised.
The ones with the darkest coloration were either very dominant, or very old.
Live bearers dominated the habitat perhaps 10 to 1 (maybe more), and large sailfin mollies were as large as adult JDs. The only other cichlid present in the cenotes I went to, was uropthalmus (mayan), and were very few, compared to JDs, but much larger. JDs average 8", some uros 12".
I watched the JDs try to eat young live bearers, the seemed to miss 9 out of 10 attempts.

The habitat seemed like a mini version of the rocky area of Lake Tanganika or Malawi

Wow that's friggin awesome. I would love to see one now that you say they're more torpedo shaped. The ugly head of the JD is of the reasons I realized after a while as to why I don't want to own a JD. :P Please please please please please do take underwater photos of them. Or scoop one up! :D

Also that's awesome that livebearers grow that large there. XD Also any pics of the Mayans?

God I am suddenly like a 9-yo kid. Bah what the hell. PICS PICS PICS PLOX.

I couldn't get pics of the Mayans without an underwater housing, same for the large mollies, the larger they were, the deeper in the water column they stayed. They were the biggest mollies I'd ever seen, never thought they could get that size.
There were also gobies (no pic), and catfish in the cenotes.

But live bearers were the most populous

And I must admit I felt like a kid snorkeling there with cichlids.

It would be so awesome to see sailfin mollies that large. I haven't kept mollies for years but that makes me wish I had some.
