Jack Dempsey Discoloration?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yeah, either find new tanks or find new homes for the GT, Jag, FH and pleco and then see if his/her color improves with the less stressful environment. a pic would also help. my female has great colors she looks just like a male but has the blue all over her gill plate, but she has always been raised in good water conditions and with a good variety of food and was bred well for color, but yeah most females are less colorful than males, if you want a different one then make sure to look at the gill plates at the store and get one that only has blue on the upper portion of it's gill plate

Here is my pair side by side, both about 6~7"

female much paler and less glittery than the males
these pics show the difference between sex, the first is my male jag, second the female.
notice how much darker (more purple) the male is than the female, and these are only 4 or 5 inches

Both of your jacks look like males to me.

seconding the point above, you do have a remarkably over-stocked 55G tank . . .

55G is a good minimum size for a JD, and fine for the firemouth, convicts and/or hondurans . . .

but at least three of your fish - - the managuense, GT, and flowerhorn - - would outgrow the 55G in a year or so . . . and there is a good chance that none of your fish will thrive in the current set-up

My Jag and FH are going into a 125g I'm getting atleast by next month, And all of them are between 2-3".

When I get my video camera I'll take a vid then you can tell me the fish don't thrive in this setup.

I don't see any unhappiness in my fish at the moment at all, and everyone including you seems to forget the fact that the biggest fish I have is 3".
