Jack Dempsey -- Eating Java Moss and Snails?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
As a last resort you could try some Java Fern and Anubias tied securely to some driftwood.

As far as snails go, Cichlids of all kinds love to munch on them. Everything from Rams, to Mbunas. They're certianly not bad for the fish every once in a while - if that's what you intended.

I had a pair of JDs a little while back and my male would constantly grab anything he could with his mouth and rip at it, shake it, and ultimately move it to where he saw fit. With how he was a live plant didn't make it 5 mins.......but then again it comes down to the fishes individual personality.....if you like his tank with plants better go with artificial!!

So I've had about 20 MTS of various sizes in the tank for a few weeks now, and I haven't found any empty shells, so that's a good sign. However, most of the ramshorns have been reduced to empty shells that I have to pick up off the bottom. One ghost shrimp has managed to stay alive up until now by hiding behind the filter intake. The java moss I thinned out and pushed into the wood more, so that's hopefully gonna be OK. The java fern bunches I put in are tied to driftwood, and some plantd loosely in the gravel, so we'll see if those hold out, but so far so good. Thanks for the feedback! Pics to come...
