jack dempsey eating?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
is there any way to tell if they have parasites?? how will quarantining them help?
sorry im kind of new to the fish thing

What size tank do you have? You need a seperate tank for them and they need to be there for 2-3 weeks to be sure they arent diseased. But if you dont know what you are doing, you wont know what you are looking for. Thats why feeders arent recommended if they arent necessary. Feeders (goldfish) cause hole in the head disease because of an enzyme they carry. That enzyme causes a vitamin deficiency.

We are feeding them right now. Not full out goldfish. rosies are bad too?

And snowskate is my roomate.

First of all, feeders arent nutritious. 2nd, Goldish and Rosies have an enzyme that causes a vitamin deficiency in your fish. This can lead to hole in the head disease, which Oscars are at high risk of getting. 3rd, Feeders can carry disease. People usually quarentine them for a few weeks and observe them to make sure they are healthy. The ones that look physically bad should be destroyed. But others can have internal disease and you may never know.

You might get away with giving them feeders and the fish being fine but theres chance that one feeder could be diseased and its transfered to your fish. But like I said, if you dont know how to quarentine feeders right and treat them to make sure they are healthy then you are running a big risk.

Also, if you have 2 oscars they will need a minimum of 120-150 gallon tank full grown. In a years time they will reach 8-9 inch and slow down in growth a little. Plus Oscars should be kept single or in a group of 5. Its possible one of them will kill the other when they get a little bigger. Fish start out fine when younger, get a little bigger and their whole attitude changes.

Were going to upgrade once we have the space. Well theyll be in a 55 within a few weeks. But after that itll be a few more months until there in a bigger tank than that.

What about feeding them marmokrebs that we breed in a seperate tank? Is that gonna give them disease?

And were not feeding them only feeder fish. THey get flakes and pellets when we feed the tinfoil barb (when they were smaller we had three tinfoil barbs, but two got eaten). Right now they dont seem to having issues with space, but were gonna upgrade tank size anyway. There is room for each of them to have shelter. THere is a plastic hallowed out log and a cave made out of three rocks.

Crayfish and shrimp are better, also if you breed fish its better too because you will have healthy feeders. Its jsut fish like goldfish and rosies arent really healthy, and coming from a store they could be diseased.

Marmorkrebs are a bit of work, they can overwhelm you because they breed so much. And if the person is careless and these fish make it to the wild they could cause problems in the enviroment. Thats the problem with marmorkrebs, is that they can overwhelm someone and those people might be careless and not dispose of them properly.

Any tips on how to breed feeder fish? THat would be a possibility. Ill look in the breeding section after this to see if theres any threads about that. Breeding ghost shrimp is a possibility, but we would need tons of ghost shrimp for them, it seems like they can eat forever.

If we were to breed marmokrebs, our oscars would most likely eat them all.Id probably get another seperate tank for them, we already have a 1.5 for feeder fish. Also we would never release them into the wild, especially not into the mississippi river. I know about the carp issue down south and know a lot about invasive species and wouldnt do that.

Hi,

No Im not saying you would do that. Its just sometimes people flush fish or give them away or sell them etc, actions like that could cause a unwanted species to make it into the enviroment.

Shrimps and guppies are easy but small so you need alot to satisfy your fish. If you want good feeders and have something sizable for your fish, you should breed convicts. Super easy to breed.

reading about raising convicts shows that it will take at least 3 months to get the convicts to the 1-2 inch size that we would need, plus to do this multiple tanks are needed and we are short on room here. NExt year maybe. So back to quarantining fish i guess...Can you explain more about that or is there a different section on the forums i should be reading?

Are marmokrebs that easy to breed? From what i read they mate with themselves out of nowhere as long as conditions are right. Seems easy...

Sounds like you are feeding a feeder based diet to your oscars. It should really be a pellet based diet with feeders as an occasional suppliment. I know it is cool to watch the feeders die in your tank, I have 6 oscars myself as well as other tank busters that enjoy a live snack. But it is not so cool to have your pets die.
Now I have never had a fish die due to a sick feeder, but I does happen. I feel that the biggest problem is the water quality issues that overfeeding creates. Most cihlids, and oscars in particular, are messy eaters. Just watch the explosion of guts that comes out from the gills of your pet.
Also, think about how healthy you would be if you only ate steak. Yes you would grow, and grow, and grow... but over time you would have health problems due to deficeinces.
Sorry about the long post, I'm trying to avoid doing chores.
