Jack Dempsey gender

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think the most recent pics from Parachromis Brad look more female. I can see why it is challenging.

Assuming the larger male is not too old .... if you put a smaller male in the tank ... and put the temp around 75-78 degrees ... I think you'd find out really quick.
Thank you very much. I think I'll try leaving the tank mates as is and setting the temp to 76ish

Here is another female

Notice all the extra blue from under her eyes sweeping back to her gills.

If you look closely its not spots but the "skin" itself is blue.

Maybe that is a male female thing. My male does not leave its cage except for feeding or to take a shot at a dither.
You know come to think of it I've noticed this same behavior in my males I had. Every single male always wanted to just chill out in one spot and would only move to chase another fish or to eat, other then that they would always sit in their favorite spots in the tank. The females on the other hand would be constantly moving around and exploring.

Sadly never got mine to breed even tho the male was almost always in breeding dress. This is a pic of the second biggest male I ever had, sadly don't have pics of my biggest/first JD that was over 10 years old and 14in. This one here was my 3rd male and he was about 9-9.5in so still pretty big for a jack.

Can’t wait till mine gets big and gets some balls on it. He’s been excruciatingly slow growing. Hopefully it pays off.

Yeah jacks a very slow growers from what I've noticed. Had one that barely grew half an inch every year, had her for 2 years and she only grew from 4in to 5in during that time.

Wish you did have pictures.

In nature they do the same, a male will acquire a territory (like the cave on the right above) in Cenote Cristallino
and the females approach when ready to spawn (like the one on the left) and if they are compatible, he allows her in.
The male above was about 10 tp 12", and you could probably fit a 250 gal in that crevice.
Once together he chases all other males and females away.
You can see below (by the jaw fungus) he had been in many mouth locking battles for dominance, and to hold that coveted, protective spot.

What were the taller bodied cichlids at the beginning of the first video? Looked kinda like a Texas in shape/color.

Those are Mayaheros uropthalmus (AKA Mayans or (false) red terrors.
In many cases the substrate, or in this case, the light color of the rock , determines how dark their or light tne cichlid coloration presents itself.
Below another video, of uropthalmus where the substrates less white.
