Jack Dempsey got me confused

If it’s a “blue gene” Jack Dempsey it isn’t the same as an Electric Blue Jack Dempsey (EBJD)

A Blue Gene is the offspring of one EBJD and a regular Jack Dempsey, and will have normal coloration and you’ll be able to sex it by the bearding most times.

If it is an EBJD then sexing will be quite a bit more difficult, some people say it can be done visually but I can’t do it. And have seen cases where people swear to the sex then end up wrong.

Either way, Jack Dempsey’s period can be very shy, I’ve seen lots of them be what I like to call “cave warriors “ and simply pick a cave or hide spot, and simply defend it. Only coming out to eat. Then I’ve seen very personable JD’s so really it can go either way. Yours sounds young, and also new to your home. So give it time and it will come out of its shell, or it won’t. duanes duanes made a great point. Maybe a top column species would help it break out of its shell.

Post a picture and we may be able to help you determine sex.

Agree with the previous posts about providing cover and some dither fish.

My larger Jack Dempseys do tend to get skittish every now and then. One method that works well for me is starvation :) When they act that way, I skip a feeding for a day or two. By day three, they are out and about begging for food - and we're BFFs again! :)

...and yes, a pic would help a ton for us to advise on the gender of the fish.

It’s in bad shape, also probably part of the reason it’s so skiddish, with some good food and clean water you’ll get a much better looking fish. It will be easier to sex then too. In some pictures it looks male, but I actually think it’s a muted female that’s stressed. The bearding looks like it touches the mouth and under the chin. I think you just can’t see it as well on the other side because it’s colors are so muted.

See what the others say.

Idk about bad shape, looks completely stress washed out but otherwise healthy for the moment. Kill the lights and let her? settle in. Agree with Covetous Covetous on the sexing. Hard to be sure when that washed out.

I figured out the problem, my heater broke and my tank was at 73 degrees. My water parameters are good. And I went got some other fish to keep with her ( I believe it’s a her). I got 7 platy, and I couldn’t resist and got 3 baby convicts. 2 of the convicts seem to be male and female and never leave each others side. While the third seems best friends with the jd. The third convict will sit in whatever cave the jd is in, and my jd doesn’t seem to mind. But if either of the other two convicts come to the cave the jd backed them out, but honestly not that aggressively. Haven’t seen my jd open it’s mouth once, just lets it’s size scare the convicts away, and then returns to the cave to hang with the third convict.
