I think I'll definitely try the tilapia.
Have you ever tried hikari sinking carnivore pellets? I was talking to someone once and they raved about them and said they shot his fish up really fast. They're kind of expensive, though

I am using those right now actually for my babies and other fish, they're expensive but they actually last quite a long time, and are worth it in my opinion, I feed them to my baby EBJD... actually all fish love them. I got a good deal on a larger bag on ebay. they are soft when in water but dont cloud the water. very good product.

Also make sure that he's actually getting the food. One of my biggest mistakes was putting a 1" dempsey and a firemouth in with my labs/demasoni... none of the fish were more than 2" at the time, but the firemouth was toast the next day, and the dempsey had no fins... a few months of cheap aqueon cichlid food (this was before I got more knowledgeable) and he was the biggest cichlid in the tank/tore a few guys up before I gave him to someone with more dempseys.

Oh yeah everyone gets a good amount of food. It's actually pretty funny watching feeding time in my tank because ill put a pellet in, my oscar will be like half an inch from grabbing it and the JD with rush in, eat it, and run away haha. and hell do this more than once.
