I think this will come strictly down to his temperment.

I agree.

So, here's the thing; I had a juvenile Jack, Oscar, and an adult Firemouth in a 90 gallon; was hoping to buy a 125 to 150 Gallon in the near future (my original intention was to buy the larger tank first, but found a gerat deal on the 90), unfortunately the Oscar jumped out the other night, and due to a stupid error on my part with not quarantining fish, I added a Black Ghost Knife and an African Butterfly; the Black Ghost Knife infected my tank with Columnaris, and everything else other than my Jack and my African did not make it -- the African is not doing so hot, but I am trying my best, doing daily 50% water changes and treating with salt.

The Jack seems to doing well, and without being too overly optimistic, he is the only one out of everybody that I anticipate will survive this whole ordeal. The thing is, after the Oscar died I was pretty upset (he was my favorite fish out of my four tanks, which is silly because I had only had him for about four months) and decided I would turn the tank into a community tank -- the plan was to re-home the Jack. Now it looks like the Jack is going to be the only fish left and I am debating whether I should still look to re-home him or try the community tank with him. The Jack seems very docile at this point; he was getting bullied by both the BGK, and the Firemouth, never messed with the Butterfly, and was lower on the totem pole than the Oscar...but I know how much a fish's temprament can change from juveniles to adults, so who knows.

It says I need five posts to be a full member so I can see your gallery, but I already have five posts so idk...either way, that stock list sounds great and I bet you have a great tank!

I really had my heart set on doing a planted tank with peaceful community tanks, but I'm not sure if I want to give away the Jack...maybe I will do a community of some bigger tankmates, but not huge like the CA/SA route.

What are some good tankmates for a Jack then? I'm thinking maybe Angels, Firemouth, Giant Danios, maybe a Pike or even a Bichir? Ideas?

I have 2 EBJD's in a community tank and there are no problems. But each fish has its own temperment so what ever u choose good luck!!!!

Thank you! Thanks for all the input in this thread! I appreciate it guys!

I don't know if you're still looking for input but I had a 6" Jack Dempsey in my 125gal for nearly a year with a 10" iridescent shark among other fish. Well one night the JD turned on the shark and ate both eyes out and destroyed the lower jaw on my poor 8 year old shark. Amazingly 2 months later he taught himself to eat again and is full healed up, minus a lower jaw :(
