What specific swordtails work best? All the swordtails I see in lfs would be eaten in my tank by the second day. I want to add some fish but what I have tried never makes it past 2 days.

Welp this is exactly what happened to me yesterday. I bought 5 swordtails to test the waters, and only had 2 left this morning. Lol

I think I might need to consider something else. I'm sure convicts would work, but I'm just not a fan for some reason. Any ideas?

I have a male convict but I am looking for a schooling fish to add color and make the aquarium look more like what you see in nature. Maybe its not possible in an aquarium with cichlids that will eat other fish. I think it would work great if it was a 500+ gallon aquarium with one or two cichlids like JD or something similar. My JD is ruthless and kills or eats anything not tough enough to swim with him. My carpintis also goes right after anything new in the tank that looks like possible food.

Today I removed the last surviving swordtail and put it in my 60 gal community. I felt bad for the little guy, it was just a matter of time.

I have been trying to get the Jack's off of blood worms and on to pellets but it's been an uphill battle. I'm currently trying to hold off on the frozen goods but they are being very stubborn. Lol

At the moment they are being pretty shy and only darting out every now and then. I think the silverdollars were definitely helping with this.20191030_191151.jpg

I'm back on the drawing board for tank mates, and I've been wondering if I could potentially add some balla sharks to act as dither fish. I know they are not geographically correct but I'm thinking it might work as they get much bigger and tend to stay on the top part of the tank. I also think they would be safe with the plants I'm trying to grow here.

Any thoughts on this? How many could I add without going to crazy. Just trying to add some activity to the tank.

Love those pics!

When my JD's get shy and skittish, I don't feed them for a day or two. Suddenly, I become their BFF!

I might suggest more hiding places, so that they'll feel more secure. Something they can hide behind when they get nervous.

Thank you!

That's a good idea. I'll see if I can get more plant trimmings this weekend to create more cover.

After reading more into the balas I don't think it might be a good fit. I'm entertaining the idea of introducing a small school of firemouths to keep it CA and make it more dynamic. But well see

Small update:

I've made a few changes to the tank and rescaped it to create more potential territories. Removed all the fake plants and started planting a few trimmings of water wisteria to see if it takes. Also added more sand I had from another project to lighten the substrate. I think I like the lighter color better.

I added 3 (very small 1.5") firemouths and a small pleco. I think the addition of the firemouths has given the JDs more confidence as they have started to come out more. The pleco went to town on my glass algae and suddenly I have a black background again lol.

Also added an additional hob to keep things clean - currently have an fx6 running, fluval C4 hob and a quiet flow 75 hob.

So far everythings working out fine the only problem I've been having is getting the JDs to eat anything other than blood worms (currently on day 5 of pellets only). I've never had fish this stubborn to eat. Not sure how long this will take -

is there a point were I should feed them blood worms again to make sure they have some kind of nutrition in them?

So far I've tried two different pellets, bug bites, and flakes but they are just not interested.

LOL!.... my female jack is the exact same.. I should have never givin her treats when she was younger...

they will eventually succumb to the pellets. It's a matter of patience.

I like the aquascaping, lots of nice open space for the fish to grow and swim.
