Jack Dempsey: Male or Female?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
please do not LOL at me, I have kids for that  looking at the last set of pics I would say female. but she is dark, almost like she has or had a clutch, after females spawn they get quite dark. she looking pure JD .

i wouldnt guess either way on sex myself, needs to grow a bit more, i see where your coming from pops

I see female. Although you can have females with male colors you can tell by the fins. this one looks to have short stubby fins. Not the long pointy fins you see on males. Just from what I see in the pic.

yeah I couldn't be sure either way, I think positing this picture has left me just as confused as before. I haven't seen the fish spawn at all and I watch my tank quite a bit for subtle changes in behavior and such. Oh well I'll keep on watching and maybe I'll figure it out. Thanks for the help and guess work.

go back and look at the vid I posted of my mated pair. ones a year old, the female, other is over 2 years old, the male, they both have fin streamers. not rounded or stubbed. So i do not think you can go by that.

what I do know you can go by is or the most reliable, males do not get spangled or colored cheeks. that's a female thing. male will get the blue lips but not cheeks. males will be taller thicker and just plain bigger, males will show more body color than a female. he will lose most his banding as a female will not. male will be more aggressive to large fish in the tank long as female present, female will be more aggressive to smaller or = size fish in the tank, long as a male present. males alone are pretty passive, females alone are pretty active. males will hide in a cave more than a female.

I go by head shape and size, and mouth shape and size. Then other factors. On that basis I would say female.
