Jack Dempsey problems

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ya mine hides all day too. sucks cuz he looks so cool and has great colors but oh well. i only see him when hes hungry, and after a meal he hides all day till hes hungry again.

I believe it varies, I have a 90 gallon with six jacks and they all come up to the glass before I feed them and 3-4 are usually hanging out in the front.

but yes they are skittish, sometimes I go to cut on/off the lights and one will dart straight into the glass and freaks out...but not everytime

it was always very active since i got it, then suddenly it's hiding in the chest constantly, doesn't come out as often, when it does come out, it swims to the other side then goes back inside the chest, also my JD when it's out, it hasn't been raising it's Dorsal Fin ever since it started hiding.

also if you only have 1 JD how do you know if it's a male or female?

Male and Female JDs are by far the most easiest to sex.. Males have sparkles on their side.. and as they get older.. they look like Blue rainbow glitters..

Female on the other hand, have a darker color on them and have a greenish turquoise pattern around their Gill plate.. ALSO, females mature faster than Males during the first 5 months of its life... After that.. The male starts to mature and grows 2-3 times the Female's size.....

Highly recommend getting an opposite sex at a young age with ur male or female.... If u need me to sex it.. post a pic here or pm me.. or search thread about it.. its been posted many times...

The Pictures aren't the best, since it wasn't the easiest to get full pictures of my JD, not the "camera type" fish, where as my Tiger, it was nothing to get pictures of him, I'm in front of the tank, he comes right in front of me.

the 2 pics above are definitely 110% females. look at the gill plate, females is all blue and males dont have it. they just have sparkles all over them and are much more colorful. look it up anywhere and look at my name.... and my dad has breeded them in the past

Yeah, JDs are really skittish fishies. We have a female who hides all day in her sewer pipe home. I installed a Marineland blue LED bubble light which is on all the time. I leave the overhead light off most of the time now, and its helped bring her out more.

As long as the light is subdued, she comes out and swims for us, eats in front of us and isn't too wiley, but as soon as that overhead light comes on she darts for cover and won't come out.

anyone want to give it a go on my jack dempsey's. I have 4 and i made a thread the other day under my computer name. no one has replied...funny thing when i took this picture on christmas day, they all sat in formation (like in the pics on my post) for 3 hours. it was pretty neat, almost like they knew they were being photographed... they havent done it since...
